The list of vegetables you can plant in May is a long one, French  & Runner Beans, Peas, Calabrese, Kale, Cabbages, Radishes, Onions, Beetroot, Turnips, Swede, Courgettes, Squash can all be started this month. May is the ideal time to plant your carrots & parsnips to ensure you have a good winter harvest. Believe it or not there is still the risk of ground frost so you should have gardening fleece at hand to cover tender crops at short notice. Even though your lettuces and salads are planted now you should be planting more towards the end of the month, this ‘succession planting’ will provide you with a constant supply of fresh salads for the summer months.

Finally, as painful as it is, you do need to thin out your seedlings to ensure that the stronger seedlings will have sufficient room for growth, this will also help aerate the soil.
