Although the rate of growth slows in the winter there are still plenty of smaller plants that will thrive and give you a fresh harvest, even in the darkest, coolest months. Check out some suggestions below from our seed collection:

Radishes can be sown at two different times of year, in spring for a summer harvest and in late summer for an autumn harvest. Summer radishes grow quick and stay small, winter radish is ready in 8-10 weeks or so and is much larger than its summer cousin; it can be eaten raw in salads or cooked like turnip or swede. China Rose Radish, is a lovely winter radish that originates as the name suggests in China and was introduced to Europe in the 1880s. Perfect for autumn planting, the long, cylindrical, tapering roots reach 15-20cm in length and 5cm in diameter. The skin is a beautiful rose colour, with white tips and firm white flesh. These spicy, peppery roots are delicious when cooked up, or even sliced and eaten raw. They are small so can be grown in beds or containers and succession growing means you can harvest all winter long. Virginia spinach is a great over-wintering variety, with delicious curled leaves. As with most spinach, you’ll get better results if you sow in autumn as this crop tends to bolt in warm weather. Shop Virginia spinach here.

A hardy lettuce is a great one for overwintering and with regular sowing you can enjoy a continuous harvest over the winter months. Our over winter lettuce this year is Brown Gold Ring Lettuce. This lettuce won an award of merit from the RHS in 1923. A deliciously tasting variety with more substance and flavour than modern Cos varieties. It is very hardy, and can be overwintered with little to no protection. Shop Brown Gold Ring Lettuce here. In addition to lettuce, many salad greens can be successfully grown in autumn including Mizuna, Japanese Greens and Pak Choi.
