Hugh Ermen’s tomato is named after horticulturist Hugh Ermen.\u00a0\u00a0Hugh Ermen was known as one of the UK\u2019s leading apple breeders.\u00a0\u00a0He also worked with the Brogdale apple collection in Kent.\u00a0\u00a0Ermen was also interested in breeding tomatoes.\u00a0\u00a0Hugh Ermen’s is a pure-line tomato bred by Hugh Ermen.<\/p>\n
The plants have a tidy growth habit and are grown as a semi-cordon.\u00a0\u00a0The vines require plenty of support as they grow.\u00a0\u00a0They produce\u00a0small to medium-sized, bright red tomatoes.\u00a0\u00a0The fruit is round, firm and medium-sized.\u00a0\u00a0The tomatoes have a balanced flavour combining sweetness and acidity.<\/p>\n
The variety is an\u00a0early fruiter, producing ripe tomatoes relatively early.\u00a0\u00a0We have also recorded fruit continuing to ripen into late autumn.<\/p>\n
