My principal research interests are in environmental dynamics and human responses in eastern Africa, focusing on how climatic changes may have influenced the origin and dispersal of early humans. My work included more than 30 years of fieldwork, principally in Ethiopia, but also in North Africa, Japan, Central America, Wales and Ireland, using palaeoecology and geochemistry of lake sediment cores. An interest in the interface between art and science has led to collaboration with colleagues at Aberystwyth’s School of Art and wider public engagement with our research.
My interest in Irish Heritage apples was undoubtedly sparked by my father Keith and his rediscovery of many indigenous varieties. Since retirement to Co Offaly, I have established an orchard of some of those mentioned in in his publications of 1945-1951. My involvement in ISSA is part of my wider interests in biodiversity and conservation.
