In April 2022, Eoin Murphy stood outside the iconic Global Seed Vault in Svalbard, reflecting on the immense importance of the seeds stored within and the role they might play in humanity’s future. During an interview on the remote Arctic archipelago, a thought-provoking question was posed: why do people focus on the Seed Vault itself but rarely ask what their own country has contributed—and why?

Returning home to Ireland, Eoin set out to find the answer.

The result is SEED, a compelling two-part podcast that uncovers the fascinating world of seed saving and its critical role in combating biodiversity loss.

In Part 1, Eoin dives into the grassroots efforts of seed conservation, speaking with:

  • Jason Horner, Organic Grower and Seed Saver
  • Anita Hayes, Founding Member of Irish Seed Savers
  • Deirdre Morrissey, Heritage Seed Officer at Irish Seed Savers
  • Jeremy Turkington, Seed Collector and Seed Bank Coordinator at Hometree
  • Rachel Doolin, Artist

Through these conversations, Eoin uncovers the passion and commitment of these individuals, highlighting how seeds are far more than tools for cultivation—they are essential to preserving our planet’s ecological balance and resilience.

Listen to SEED to uncover the stories, science, and spirit behind seed saving, and learn why it matters now more than ever.
