Join us for an engaging introductory workshop on the art and science of seed saving. This hands-on course is designed for gardeners, growers, and plant enthusiasts who want to learn how to produce, process, and preserve high-quality seed for future generations.
Through a combination of practical demonstrations and interactive learning, participants will explore the foundations of plant reproduction and seed stewardship, including:
- Understanding basics flower morphology and plant reproduction
- Self-pollination, cross-pollination, and isolation techniques
- Which vegetable crops readily crossbreed and how to prevent unwanted crossing
- The basics of inbreeding and outbreeding in seed production
- Maintaining healthy and genetically diverse seed populations
Participants will also gain practical experience in essential seed-saving techniques, including:
- Germination testing and seed viability assessment
- Seed drying and long-term storage methods
- Extracting and fermenting seeds from wet fruits
- Harvesting, threshing, cleaning, and winnowing dry-seeded crops
- Identifying the right stage for seed harvest
- Introduction to common seed-borne pests and diseases, and basic strategies for prevention and healthy seed selection
By the end of the workshop, participants will have the confidence to begin saving seeds at home and a deeper understanding of the vital role seed saving plays in biodiversity, crop resilience, and food heritage conservation.

Instructing this workshop
Carimi Cortez Ribeiro is a biologist and plant scientist with a PhD focused on plant taxonomy, morphology, anatomy, and the evolution of angiosperms. With extensive experience studying and managing biodiversity through field expeditions and herbarium research, Carimi brings expertise in plant systematics and conservation. Currently serving as Curator and Gene Bank Manager at Irish Seed Savers Association, Carimi leads the conservation of Irish plant genetic resources, including seed bank collections and field collections of Ireland’s unique heritage apple trees.
