So called as the fruits are acorn shaped; dark green ribbed skin about 20cm long, several per plant. However, when you come to eat them it’s clear why the ‘Table Queen’ part is so fitting because the deep orange dry, thick flesh is so incredibly sweet and delicious. The squash can be eaten fresh or stored over winter. It was introduced in 1913 by Des Moines’s Iowa Seed Company and in a ‘bake off’ in the 1930’s reigned supreme against three dozen other squashes. However, it is believed to have originated from the Arikara Tribe of North Dakota.
