Description
Grow a piece of Ireland’s vegetable heritage with Buan onion seeds. Buan is a distinctive Irish heritage onion with an impressive history. This unique variety was bred in Ireland by onion grower Barnie Crombie. Crombie continued his onion trials until the 1980s. Brought back from near extinction by Irish Seed Savers when we repatriated the seed from the Vavilov Gene Bank in 1997. We have continued growing and conserving Buan since then.
Buan is well suited to the Irish climate and growing conditions. It has shown strong performance during typical Irish summers. The variety produces bulbs with white, flavoursome flesh. It is also valued for its excellent storage potential. The name Buan comes from an old Irish word meaning “long life”. Its name is particularly fitting for an onion with good keeping qualities. Buan has also won prizes at several agricultural and horticultural shows. This makes it an excellent choice for gardeners seeking unusual onion varieties. It is also ideal for anyone interested in Irish heritage vegetables.
