Description

Kilscanlon Spring Greens is an Irish landrace originally from Kilscanlon, County Limerick.  This traditional kale produces an abundance of medium-sized leaves.  The leaves are soft and have a tasty flavour.  They can be harvested fresh throughout the winter and spring.  The variety is particularly well suited to colder growing conditions.  It has excellent tolerance to cold and produces hardy plants.  Irish Seed Savers grew it outdoors through the winter of 2024–2025.  The crop received no fleece or other protective covering during that winter.  This makes Kilscanlon Spring Greens well suited to Irish growing conditions.  Its ability to remain productive through winter provides fresh greens during colder months.  The leaves can be enjoyed fresh or cooked.

Kilscanlon Spring Greens has an interesting history within Irish seed saving.  The most recent crop was grown from seed saved in 1999.  That seed remained viable and was successfully used for cultivation many years later.  This provides a notable example of long-term seed preservation.  The variety forms part of Ireland’s heritage vegetable collection maintained by Irish Seed Savers.
