Description

The Book of Wilding is a practical guide to rewilding, from small spaces to large landscapes.  It is written by Isabella Tree and Charlie Burrell, pioneers of the rewilding project at Knepp in Sussex.

The book explores how nature can recover when given the opportunity to flourish.  It draws on knowledge gained through the authors’ pioneering work at Knepp.  The approach covers rewilding on both a small and large scale.  It considers what can be achieved in gardens, allotments, ponds and other small spaces.  The book also explores rewilding farms, estates, rivers, parks and wider landscapes.  It explains why restoring natural processes can benefit wildlife and ecosystems.

Rewilding on Any Scale

Rewilding does not have to involve a large area of land.  The book explores ways to encourage nature in spaces as small as window boxes.  Gardens, churchyards and urban spaces can all provide opportunities for rewilding.  Larger projects can involve farms, rivers, estates and wider landscapes.  The book considers different approaches according to the scale and character of each space.  It encourages readers to consider how their own surroundings could support nature.

From Experience to Practical Guidance

The book grew from the authors’ experience at Knepp in West Sussex.  Their work there developed into a wider exploration of restoring nature.  The book shares knowledge gathered through that experience.  It also responds to questions from people interested in rewilding their own surroundings.  The guidance covers practical possibilities alongside the wider principles behind rewilding.  The authors explore how individuals and communities can contribute to restoring nature.
