Site and Facilities Coordinator
Irish Seed Savers Association, Capparoe, Scarriff, Co. Clare

Reporting to: Operations Manager
Responsible for: Maintenance landworkers, volunteers, scheme workers and contractors
Contract: Permanent, following a 6 month probation period
Hours: 35 hours per week, Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm
Salary: €32,400 to €38,700 per year, depending on experience

About us
Irish Seed Savers Association is a charity working to protect Ireland’s food crop heritage. Our 20-acre site at Capparoe holds a seed bank, a native apple orchard, gardens and a visitor centre. The site is rural, so you will need your own transport.

Purpose of the job
You keep ISSA’s land, buildings, vehicles and equipment safe, working and well maintained. You carry out regular building safety and security inspections, plan and deliver maintenance, and supervise colleagues and volunteers during site tasks.

Duties and responsibilities

  • Maintain the buildings and the site in general, including polytunnels, sheds, lands, fences, paths and signage
  • Develop and manage maintenance schedules and keep written records
  • Carry out basic repairs across carpentry, painting, and minor plumbing and electrical work, and call in qualified trades when the job requires it
  • Service and repair garden machinery and vehicles: lawnmowers, strimmers, rotavator, tractor and attachments. Routine servicing includes filter and oil changes, brake pads, blade sharpening and fault diagnosis
  • Operate the tractor and attachments for site, garden and orchard work
  • Maintain and repair hand tools
  • Supervise and brief maintenance landworkers, scheme workers and volunteers on site tasks, including tool use and safe working
  • Liaise with contractors and suppliers, obtain quotes and oversee work on site
  • Carry out safety and security inspections, keep risk assessments current, and manage safe storage of fuel, chemicals and equipment
  • Monitor maintenance budget spending
  • Support the garden and orchard teams as required

Person specification

Essential

  • Practical experience in general site and building maintenance
  • Confident and safe use of power tools and handheld machinery, including strimmer, hedge trimmer, leaf blower and power drills
  • Basic mechanical skills: servicing and repairing small machinery and vehicles
  • Basic electrical knowledge and a clear sense of when a qualified electrician is needed
  • Carpentry and painting skills
  • Tractor driving experience
  • Full clean driving licence and own transport
  • Basic Microsoft Office skills, Word and Excel, for maintenance records and health and safety documentation
  • Experience of applying health and safety standards in a work setting
  • Strong organisational and communication skills, able to plan your own week and work unsupervised
  • Willing to work outdoors in all weather and to carry out physical work
  • Enthusiasm for the role and a desire to learn new skills

Desirable

  • Chainsaw experience and a chainsaw licence (QQI Level 5 chainsaw certification)
  • Experience operating a mini digger, ideally with a valid ticket (QQI / CSCS 360 excavator)
  • Trailer licence (category BE or W)
  • Safe Pass and manual handling certification
  • Knowledge of regulations and legislation relating to horticultural or farm work
  • Training, qualifications or experience in project or facilities management
  • Experience in facilities coordination and land management
  • Knowledge of maintenance planning and scheduling
  • Experience of working with volunteers
  • Interest in organic growing, heritage seeds or conservation

Certification listed as desirable can be funded by ISSA for the right candidate.
