Grow Your Own Vegetables and Fruit – A Beginner’s Gardening Course – 10am-4.30pm 

This course is suited for anyone who plans to start a food garden.  It is filled with practical tips and demonstrations on how to prepare the soil, a compost making session, seed sowing demonstration, growing in polytunnels and how to avoid pests and diseases. There will also be a session on growing fruit bushes and herbs.  It will include classroom sessions on crop planning, rotations and tips on which crops are best suited for the small garden.  

A hands-on course – so bring gardening gear. 

Cost: €100

  • Workshops suitable for adults only – children under 18 years are not permitted to attend.

Tutor – Klaus Laitenberger: Klaus is the author of four gardening books: ‘The Self-Sufficient Garden’, ‘Vegetables for the Irish Garden’, ‘Fruit and Vegetables for the Polytunnel and Greenhouse’ and ‘A Vegetable Grower’s Handbook’.  He works as an Organic Inspector for the Organic Trust Ltd and manages a number of exciting new garden projects.  He worked as Head Gardener at the Organic Centre in Leitrim and as Head Gardener for the garden restoration in Lissadell House in Co. Sligo. 

He has an MSc in Organic Farming and was lecturing for many years at UCC at the MSc course in Organic Horticulture. 

He is a regular contributor to the BBC Gardener’s Corner and to various gardening magazines e.g. The Irish Garden, Irish Independent and Irish Examiner.  Klaus also works as an organic advisor and runs gardening courses throughout the country.
