This climbing French bean is of Cherokee Nation heritage. In the 1830s after being violently displaced by European colonisers, the Cherokee Nation migrated along the ‘Trail of Tears’. They took essential and meaningful items with them, including the seeds of this variety. A tall and productive crop, producing abundant green pods that darken to purple as they age. Left to mature, the dried beans are small, shiny and black. Eaten either as immature pods or dried as mature beans for stews.
