Description
Irish Preans is an unusual variety returned to ISSA from the British Heritage seed library. It came originally from an Irish agricultural research station. The flowers are maroon/mauve which develop into large pods of enormous peas. Very tall, growing up to 2m, so needs plenty of support. Their shape is long and curved, more like a bean than a typical round pea (hence the name prean). With their high starch and low sugar content, they are best dried and cooked rather than eaten as a green pea.
